DIY Desk Redo

I am not a rummage sale person. I don’t like having them or going to them. In fact, I have actually had a total of 1 rummage sale my whole life and after I did it, I swore I would never do it again. Don’t get me wrong, if you love rummage sales, then by all means go for it. I have friends who live for a good rummage sale and if it makes them happy, I am happy for them.

That being said, a few weeks ago my neighbor had a rummage sale. Since my neighbors and I share a driveway, I had no choice but to see some of the things that were out in there yard. I spotted something that I had been wanting for my salon from across the yard and decided I might just make my first rummage sale purchase of my life. I had been wanting a desk for my office at work, but I didn’t want to spend a lot of money for it …and what do you know…my neighbor had a solid wood desk sitting out in her yard.

Get this…the desk was $7. Now, while that was an awesome deal, there was a reason the desk was only $7.

It was a little worse for wear to say the least.

So, I got out my hand sander and went to work. In the picture above, you can see where I had started sanding on the right side of the desk. The left side is exactly how I bought it. YIKES!

My neighbors homeschool their children and this was a desk was what their daughter used. I think she got bored a lot.

You can probably imagine how much I sanded…and sanded….and sanded. But I finally got a smooth surface after sanding about 4 times.

I started with a pretty rough grit sand paper (60 I think) and ended with a final pass of 100 grit. Then I applied a sanding sealer to give it a very smooth finish. Next I applied a light coat of primer on the top where the worst of the damage was done.

At this point I thought that I should have pretty spectacular biceps, but they really didn’t look that much different. …bummer. That’s okay because it’s time to pick a paint color and I have my heart set on Robin’s egg blue. After two coats of paint, I finally have the desk I envisioned in my head…

I love it so much I can’t hardly make myself take it to work. If I could find a place in my house for it, I would keep it home. I really need it at work though…to bad. I showed it to my neighbor and she could hardly believe it was the same desk. I then told her I would sell it to her for $40. Just kidding.

I love love love the color so much I decided to paint my son’s bird house too.

As you can tell, I cut some cute little birdie vinyl stickers to dress it up. My son loved it.

My first official rummage sale purchase turned out pretty good, but I doubt it makes me a “rummager” any time soon.

….And now I am on the hunt to find something else to paint blue.

….And my husband is a little worried for the furniture.

Happy Thursday.

love,
Val
