What NOT to do with Coconut Oil

coconut oil
I follow a few other bloggers that I really like. One of them is Kate from www.thesmallthingsblog.com .  You also might recognize her from all of her popular Pinterest pins that showcase her awesome hair tutorials. We have a lot in common, we are both hairstylists, crafters and of course, bloggers.  She has great advice and tips on make-up, fashion, hair and much more.
Earlier this week she blogged about how she suffered from dry hair and (under the advice of her colorist) tried using coconut oil to fix it. She loved the results and raved about how it left her hair soft, shiny and in much better condition. Well, you can guess what happened next, off I went straight to the grocery store for my own bottle of coconut oil for my own beautiful, shiny, soft hair. Hey, if it’s good enough for Kate, it’s good enough for me.
As you can imagine, a few things went differently for me. My first mistake was getting too excited and not waiting for a day off to try this miracle product. No, I decided that I need to use it on one of the busiest mornings of my week. So, I hop in  the shower, shampoo my hair, and slather the coconut oil on my hair for a few minutes. In the meantime I shave my legs, I thoroughly wash myself, and I sing a heart wrenching rendition of the Star Spangled Banner that brought the house down. The “house” being my dog who had a tiny doggy tear in the corner of her eye. She absolutely loved it. ….She told me so.
Before I knew it, it was time to rinse. So I rinsed. …and I rinsed. ….and I rinsed.  ….and I rinsed. PANIC! The stuff was not coming out and now I was officially out of time because I had to get my boys to school. So I stepped out of the shower, threw my hair back in a clip, got dressed and ran my kids to school looking something like a 1950’s greaser. All I needed was a white t-shirt and a black leather jacket. Can anyone say disaster?
I hurried back home and hopped back in the shower and proceeded to rewash my hair TWICE before I felt like I didn’t have an oil slick. I was completely disappointed.
BUT.
Even after my crazy experience, that was nothing like Kate’s, I do feel there is still a place for coconut oil in hair care. In fact, I recommended it to a couple of my clients over the last couple of days.
Those clients had extremely curly, dry hair.
I really feel that if you have this type of hair, a little bit of coconut oil would be very beneficial to you. Apply the coconut oil first and let it set for a few minutes, then shampoo and condition like normal. It should do to your hair exactly what it didn’t do to mine. Make your hair shiny and soft.
If you do not have this type of hair…
Don’t do it. Just don’t. Trust me.
One other tip:
I also applied the oil to the driest parts of my skin before I showered. It absolutely made my skin super soft and I didn’t even have to use lotion afterwards. Just beware of a slick shower!
Okay, I lied..one more tip:
Slather it on your feet and slip on socks before bed. In the morning you’ll have the softest feet ever!
I hope my experience helps and maybe gave you a laugh.
Happy Friday.
love,
Val

p.s.  Do you use Coconut Oil? If so, how do you use it?
